July 2025

In 2012 I designed and built an Internet Radio. At that time I wrote an article for Nuts and Volts magazine (March 2012) describing the build. After I got the Internet Radio's electronics to work I built a cabinet for it that was based on the design of the Bose 901 speakers that I lusted over at the time but could not afford. I made the cabinet out of solid walnut because it is one of my favorites woods to work with. If you are interested in the build of the cabinet check out the following link:

Over time I lost interest in listening to Internet Radio stations for many reasons so this device sat idle for many years. A couple of days ago I passed by it on the shelf and thought I really should do something with this since I had spent so much time and energy building it and because it is beautiful. Then inspiration struck and I decided to make it into a Bluetooth Speaker which would see much more use. This actually turned out to be a simple conversion as the cabinet already had a stereo amplifier and speakers built in. All I had to do was remove the Internet Radio electronics and replace them with a Bluetooth receiver module I bought on Amazon (Aideepen BT 5.0 Stereo Audio Receiver Module, 3.7-5V MP3 Decoder Board). The conversion from an Internet Radio to a Bluetooth Speaker took about an hour and cost about $2.00.

I am happy with how this turned out and I am listening to my new Bluetooth Speaker as I write this.

I used Google SketchUp to design the original cabinet. This is a great tool. Once you are finished with the design you can get accurate dimensions of all of the component parts.

Here is the converted Bluetooth Speaker on my fireplace where it will live. It actually sounds really good. It has a 40 watt stereo amplifier that can really crank and the speakers in the cabinet can handle it nicely.

Here you can see the beauty of the walnut wood and the nice contours of the cabinet.

Here as well

If you didn't know better you would not know there are speakers inside the cabinet.
